Nostalgic Tv Episode 4: Avatar:The Last Airbender

The show that needs no introduction, but i’ll still give you one, is one of the most prized possessions during the abundant amount of shows being released during the late 90’s to the mid 00’s.  Globally acclaimed by critics and audiences, was praised for its humor, art style, and its amazing plot. The asian-inspired show was centered around a human civilization divided into four nations, the Water Tribe (Water Bending), the Fire Nation (Fire Bending), the Air Nomads (Air Nomads), and the Earth Kingdom (Earth Bending).

Each nation had there own set of warriors known as benders which have the ability to control the element of the nation using martial arts. At any point, there is only one person in the world able to bend all four elements at once, his name is the Avatar. The Avatars main purpose is to keep equality amongst the nations and maintain balance between the spirit and human world. Once the Avatar dies they are reincarnated into a new body and the cycle starts over again.

We start the series when the Avatar, who has been frozen asleep for 100 years is found. 12-year-old Aang (Avatar) is found right in the middle of the Fire Nation Invasions. When finally awoken, he must learn new skills and perfect his bending skills, while trying to stop the Fire Nation from destroying the other nations. He goes on journeys across the lands with his two new friends Katara and Sokka.

The show has amazing character development as Aang must deal with being tasked to save the world, while still being a kid. Aang must undo all the damage done while he was gone for 100 years. For a kid’s show, the antagonists were pretty deep and well thought out. Some of them were really sickening. A banished prince unsure of his destiny, fighting within himself and his confusion of his real personality. A crazed princess born with talents and incredible bending but is jealous of her sibling. And lastly, the terrible Firelords. So evil that one firelord dueled his own son! So evil that he banished his own wife! So evil that one ordered his son to kill his grandson! So evil that one left his best friend to die! So evil that one even lead a genocide!

The best thing about this show was its mix of action and humor! The action was a highlight in the series as it wasn’t blurred like other anime’s. Each scene was amazing and each one was detailed and immersive. The humor was one of the funniest on Nickelodeon at the time. Not only did the humor lighten the mood from the fierce invasion in the background but it also actually made you laugh. But what made the show so successful was the story. A thrilling story each episode kept you wanting more. The episodes were different each time, not boring you with the same old thing. If you want to know more about the story you must watch it. Trust me you’ll love it. Anyhow, this is a must watch. Then again, every show on my list is.

Gotham

Yesterday one of my most anticipated show of this year came out. Gotham, a show taking place in the infamous city of Gotham where batman is known to live in and defend. But in this series, we take it back to the very day batman started. The day his parents died. On a quiet night in Gotham, after exiting a theater, Martha and Thomas Wayne were mugged and shot to death on crime alley, while their son Bruce watched.

Now you might be wondering how can there be a show without batman? Well, the answer is simple. There is no Batman. This show follows James Gordon a GCPD detective as he tries to free Gotham from its crime reputation, while solving the murders of the Wayne’s. As the show takes place well before our beloved Dark Knight, we get to take a look at our most favorite villains and their origin stories.

At the heart of the show it is a gritty crime drama, but with all the things we love about Gotham mixed into it. And the Pilot shines at showing this. With great crime lords, like Falcone and Fish Mooney, and a great lead like James Gordon had me interested through the whole 60 minutes. With a crime ruled city, James must deal with corruption and choosing to do the right thing. He will later find out you must do the wrong thing to do the right. The Pilot had a few flaws but was good enough to keep me wanting more, and Im sure it will only get better. Maybe this will soon become in my Nostalgic list…

Nostalgic Tv Episode 3: Codename K.N.D

Or as other people like to call it Kids Next Door, wasn’t a hit with some kids but had enough of a following and nostalgic moments to make it on this list. From evil broccoli to murderous teddy bears, this show had some of the most original episodes and plot I’ve ever watched. The show revolves around the main kid operatives of Sector V – Numbuh One (Nigel Uno), Numbuh Two (Hoagie Gilligan Jr.), Numbuh Three (Kuki Sanban), Numbuh Four (Wallabee Beatles) and Numbuh Five (Abigail Lincoln).

(From Left to Right) Number 2 , Number 4, Number 3, Number 1, and Number 5.

Number 3, Number 1, and Number 5.

Their mission is to fight crimes against kids, such as vegetables and homework, committed by adults, senior citizens, teenagers, and other evil children. They are known as Sector V of a global secret organization ruled by kids around the world called the Kids Next Door.

They worked from there headquarters and used advanced technology to fend off the numerous amounts of embarrassing villains such as count spankulot, a spoof of count Dracula but instead of blood he spanks naughty children, and Father the biggest threat to the KND. His powers include pyrokinesis, levitation, mind control, and shape-shifting. Father’s body is completely black with a red outline along his body and eyebrows, giving him a devil like appearance.

The thing that had me the most interested about the show was the 5 main characters, Numbuh 1,2,3,4, and 5. Each character had there own unique personality. Also each had their own share of story plots by themselves, my favorites being Numbuh 4’s Dodgeball episode where he had to master the techniques of dodgeball to save his little brother and ends off in one of the most entertaining dodgeball matches over ever seen, and Numbuh 3’s pink eye operation, when a outbreak of pink eye occurs in school, number 3 is put to the test and tries to find out the mystery behind it.

With hundreds of memorable moments from this show, i can go on for hours talking about my favorite episodes but the main point is that this show was awesome. With lots of hidden mysteries, and different challenges each episode, that went from there house all the way to space. No literally.

This is totally a must watch series.

Nostalgic Tv Episode 2: Courage The Cowardly Dog

Around the 2000’s every cartoon was meant to teach you a lessson or make you happy. This wasnt the case with Courage the Cowardly Dog. This show revolved around scary monsters. Although not the most kid friendly show, it was a hit to kids of all ages. The show was about a pink dog named courage, who lived in the middle of nowhere which is owners the old Muriel and her husband who hated courage’s guts.

Every episode, had some bizarre monster, weather it be a chicken from outer space, a giant bug in a suit, a red talking cat, or just a crazy barber, would come and either try to capture, or disturb Courage’s owners, sometimes without them knowing, and Courage would always save his owners from the monster. The best part was that they would go back home and act like it never happened, then repeat.

Just some of the completely disturbing monsters you come across the show.

The show had a great flow and plot line for each episode making them more interesting then the next. it had alot of creepy characters and also being far different than the happy show norm going on at the time. Of course one thing that also made Courage was the humor thrown in. Lots of comedy and jokes are thrown into episodes, and the way Courage tries to communicate. A lot of the monsters actually trick Courage’s owners and then try to get what they want. One thing that stood out was the artwork and animation style. The way courage was drawn and animated was very cool, it was very creepy and well done. And the music was equally as haunting.

Courage's scared face.

Courage was probably the only show that can be both funny and creepy at the same time. Parents I warn you to not show your kids this show or they will be forever haunted (Just kidding. Ok, maybe a little). I watched this show all the time as a kid and I’ll still watch clips on youtube occasionally, its just a hard show to break away from, I’ve seen most episodes and memorized half of them. It is probably the show that brings back the creepiest nostalgia for me in the early 2000s.

Nostalgic Tv Episode 1: Teen Titans.

To start off the list is one of the best superhero themed show ever, maybe even the best. Teen Titans is a Tv show based on DC Comics characters known as Robin, Starfire, BeastBoy, Raven, and Cyborg.

The show first premiered back in 2003 and lasted till 2006. The show revolves around five teenagers with unique super powers out to save Jump City, with new challenges each day and a great cast of villains it had me interested for years. The story was also amazing, one of my favorite episodes was “Winner takes all”, an episode where all 5 teens and a group of heroes and villains are teleported to an arena to fight against each other in a tournament being controlled by the Master Of Games. The twist was whoever lost had been stripped of their soul and forever kept in the Master Of Games soul keeper jewels. This then turns into a fight for life or death and is one of the most spine tingling episodes, it still gives me shivers today.

Slade
Slade

One of the highlights of this show were the villians. They were so diversed and interesting, each one had me going nuts about how awesome they were! Some of the villians were Slade, also known as DeathStroke, who was the Arch nemesis of the Teen Titans and would do anything to kill them, such as manipulation and mind games. He was also a very skilled fighter. There was also the British Mad Mod. If you couldnt tell by his name, he was a British criminal inspired by 60’s england. He is just plain weird, which is why he’s awesome! There are whole bunch of more great villians throughout the show which make it so unique each episode. The episodes were awesome and each character was original and had a unique personality, which made the show very interesting.

Villains are great but who can forget the Titans, green skinned, shape shifting mutant Beast Boy, who can turn into any animal, extinct and all, who a goofy attitude and lazy/fun behavior. Starfire, a pretty red-headed alien girl who can fly and shoot bolts from her hands who is very naive and has limited knowledge on human culture, Cyborg who is half robot and can transform his arm into a cannon, as well as having brute strength, Raven, who is very reserved and mysterious, who uses dark energy and telekinesis to move levitate and throw objects, and of course Robin, the leader who uses gadgets and is a very skilled fighter.

Raven ( Purple hooded girl ) Beast Boy ( The green guy ) Cyborg ( The big robot thing ) Robin ( Kid with R on his suit ) and Starfire ( The girl with red hair)
Raven ( Purple hooded girl ) Beast Boy ( The green guy ) Cyborg ( The big robot thing ) Robin ( Kid with R on his suit ) and Starfire ( The girl with red hair)

They are all pretty sarcastic and add lots of humor to the lighthearted show, which is probably why I fell in love with it. All the different characteristics had blended into the show perfectly. Teen Titans had some of the best voice actors as well, and the music was highly memorable and always stuck in my head.  Teen Titans dominated my entire childhood, and was one of the cartoons that I watched the most, as well as obsessed over the most. The show is just as good as I remember.
